377 HERBERT KERR ROOKE (BORN 1872) Nansen and the Fram gouache, signed and inscribed 'Rough Sketch - Nansen at the Fram', 37cm x 52cm. * Fridtjof Nansen (1861 - 1930) the Norwegian explorer in 1893 set sail in a specially constructed wooden top sail schooner 'Fram' to study ice flows in Greenland. He reached the furthest point North he could then left the ship in charge to Johanden and he set off further North reaching what at the time was a record, he then turned south and wintered at Franz Josef Land, where he was picked up by the Jackson Harmsworth expedition in 1896. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1926. The Fram is now preserved in a Museum in Oslo. £600-800
